"She is alive and active - let us hear her voice and trace her influence even now" Virginia Woolf

Writing at a time when the appeal for human rights had brought the revolution into America and France, Mary Wollstonecraft produced her declaration of female independence in 1792. Passionate and outspoken, "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" attacked the vision of the docile, decorative femininity, and established the principles of emancipation. : an equal education for girls and boys, an end to prejudice so that women become defined by their profession, not by their partner. Mary Wollstonecraft's work was met with a mixture of admiration and indignation - one critic called her "a hyena in petticoats" - albeit recognizing her as the mother of modern feminism.
