"If the mask creates on the one hand the comic and the buffoonish and on the other the deformed and the horrible, it is equally true that sometimes these worlds, apparently distant, converge and intertwine in what could be defined at all effects labyrinths of horror. And this is the key to the reading necessary to penetrate the darkness of the chosen stories, in a crescendo of nightmares, hallucinations and desperation that dilate time and space, triggering a creeping doubt: what is the real me? The superstructures of the ego given by society and by unshared values lead, more or less consciously, to show fragmented and not necessarily truthful parts of themselves. But what is really hidden in the abysses of man? in life as well as in the literature that reflects it.
Parallel to the horror, the grotesque insinuates itself, a real catalyst used to probe the evil, the deformed and the horrible. it is therefore an essential and indispensable trait d’union in outlining the dark paths of the most fearful nightmares: illness, death, the perdition of the soul. The dreamlike realism of such anxieties leads to the manifestation of pathological daytime delusions, as happens in the case of The King of the Golden Mask by Schwob in which the only vision conforming to the truth is conveyed by a blind man who remembers Tiresias: divinatory oracle bearer, in this case, of misfortunes.
