Tales and documents of real or alleged acts of Vampirism

Among the scariest figures that populate our imagination, it is very rare to find powerful and as significant as that of the Vampire, a being capable of letting as much blood as ink flow on the pages that have immortalized him. In fact, great merit of this frightening as well as legitimate popularity is undoubtedly of the Literature which, sinking its sharp canines in the news and in popular legend, starting from 1600 has been able to nourish its imagination to give immortal life to a figure of such strength as to impress itself. indelibly in the collective imagination. It is precisely in this key that we want to develop this selection, offering the reader an alternation of documents and stories, so that we can propose a comparison between the figure that folklore and oral tradition have marked in the popular consciousness and that which literature has been able to grasp and model, particularly in short fiction between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Without claiming to exhaust the subject, Draculea wants to be an introduction to the figure of the Vampire, highlighting through documents and stories the differences between historical vampirism and literary figure, analyzing the sources - prototypes apparently distant from the more modern image although key suspects of early Vampirism such as Arnold Paole, Peter Plogojowitz, Johannes Cuntius and the Silesian Shoemaker; William of Newburgh's Early Millennium Chronicles; exotic suggestions pushed as far as the Far East - and at the same time offering the reader a selection of stories less known to the Italian public but of a certain impact and importance, both from a literary point of view and for the construction of the archetypal figure and variations on the model prince.

This book aims to be a transversal journey, we will move through time through ancient pages, breathing chronicles and past stories (you will notice how much importance is given to the sources by the narrators of the time, who are keen to emphasize how the facts are reported by authoritative, credible or even present people); but we will also move in space, between Vampires near and far, from Europe to Asia, from neighboring Greece to distant China, passing through Russia, England, Iceland, etc. . ; and at the end of this journey we hope to be able to offer a clearer image of this demonic figure, immortal in constitution as it is already in the literature.
