What makes a man and a woman know that, of all men and women of the world, do they belong together? None other than the chance and having met? Nothing but being alive in this world at the same time? Or maybe there is one soul among all the others - between all who have been alive, generation after generation, from a at the other end of the world - who must love us or die? Which, to ours time, we must love, which we must seek for life, everywhere and despite everything, until the end?

One evening on his way home through Central Park, Eben Adams, a young and disheartened painter, meets a little girl dressed in old fashioned way that she plays hopscotch. Jennie appears to be there on her own as well she for some reason she starts walking along with Eben and talking with he. When the man asks her what her desire is greater than her, the little girl, in a candid and mysterious way, simply replies: “I would like that you waited for me to grow up ”. Eben certainly may not know, but he gives that moment his life and his way of seeing the world will change forever and he will find out what it means to be an artist and, above all, what it means to love. Portrait of Jennie, masterpiece forgotten about twentieth-century American literature, it is history wonderful of a love that defies time and death, one of the novels most original fantasies ever written and a touching reflection on nature of love and destiny.
